How to Read a Supplement Facts Label, Using the Olivaro Bottle as an Example

Quick answer

Read a Supplement Facts panel in six steps: serving size, servings per container, each amount with its %DV, any proprietary blend, other ingredients, then the claims and their asterisk. On Olivaro, that gives 1 mL per serving, 0.7 mcg chromium (2% DV) and a 200 mg blend whose 22 ingredients have no individual amounts.

Overview

What are the 6 parts of a Supplement Facts panel?

Every panel has the same six parts. Learn them once and any bottle takes five minutes.

Parts 1 and 2

How do serving size and servings per container work?

Every amount on the panel is per serving. Multiply by the servings you take each day to get your daily total.

On Olivaro, one serving is 1 mL, and the bottle holds 30. The label permits 1 or 2 droppers a day. That choice changes everything downstream.

Olivaro per day at each label amount. Math from the Supplement Facts panel.
Droppers per dayChromium per dayBlend per dayDays per bottle
10.7 mcg200 mg30
21.4 mcg400 mg15

Cost works the same way. A $49 bottle comes to about $1.63 per day at 1 dropper and $3.27 at 2.

Part 3

What does %DV mean on a supplement label?

%DV compares one serving to a daily reference amount. A low number means the serving gives a small share of that reference.

The Daily Value for chromium is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). Olivaro gives 0.7 mcg per mL, which is 2%. Blood sugar studies used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, so even 2 droppers sit about 140 times below the low end.

  • A dagger (†) means no Daily Value exists. Olivaro's blend line carries one.
  • A high %DV is not automatically better. Check the upper limit for that nutrient.

Part 4

What does a proprietary blend hide, and what can you still work out?

A blend hides each ingredient's amount but not its rank. Under 21 CFR 101.36, the label must show the blend's total weight and list ingredients from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

That rank gives you a ceiling. The ingredient in position k can weigh no more than the total divided by k. If it weighed more, every ingredient above it would weigh more too, and the sum would pass the total.

Highest possible amounts for selected Olivaro blend ingredients, from label order alone. These are arithmetic ceilings, not measured amounts.
PositionIngredientCeiling per mLCeiling at 2 mLAmount studied per day
4African mango50 mg100 mg300 mg (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss)
8Gymnema25 mg50 mg200 to 400 mg (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph)
12Panax ginseng16.7 mg33.3 mgAbout 100 mg to 20 g (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014)
16L-arginine12.5 mg25 mg2 to 20 g (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance)
17Beta-alanine11.8 mg23.5 mg1.6 to 6.4 g (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance)
22L-carnitine9.1 mg18.2 mg2 to 3 g (NIH ODS, Carnitine)

Even at its ceiling, gymnema at 2 droppers reaches a quarter of the low studied amount. The full list sits on the Olivaro ingredients page.

Part 5

What are "other ingredients" on a supplement label?

They are everything that is not an active ingredient: the base liquid, sweeteners, preservatives and flavors. They still matter for allergies, pets and taste.

BaseGlycerin, water
SweetenersStevia extract 97% (Reb A), xylitol
PreservativesSodium benzoate, potassium sorbate
Flavor and acidityOrganic lemon extract, citric acid, natural flavors

High-purity Reb A has GRAS notices the FDA did not question (FDA, Aspartame and Other Sweeteners). Xylitol is the one to act on: it can cause a fast, dangerous blood sugar drop in dogs (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol). The label does not claim vegan, gluten-free or allergen-free status.

Part 6

What does the asterisk on a supplement claim mean?

It points to the FDA statement. The statement says the FDA has not evaluated the claim and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Claims like "supports" or "helps maintain" are structure-function claims. They describe a body function, not a disease. Olivaro's front panel uses four, each with an asterisk:

  • "Balanced Blood Sugar Advanced Support*"
  • "Fasting Blood Sugar Health Support*"
  • "Clean Ingredients*"
  • "Balanced Form System*"

The FTC expects health claims to rest on good human trials of the same product and dose. A disclaimer does not fix a misleading claim (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). No trial of Olivaro has been published, so read these lines as the maker's description, not as test results.

Registration

Is an FDA-registered facility the same as FDA approval?

No. Registration puts a facility on the FDA's list. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements).

Your turn

A five-minute label check for any supplement

  1. Find the daily total

Serving size times servings per day. Then work out how long the bottle lasts.

  2. Compare to research

Look up the studied dose for each printed amount.

  3. Rank the blend

Divide the blend weight by each position to get a ceiling.

  4. Flag interactions

Circle grapefruit, licorice, ginseng, caffeine sources and amino acids. Bring the list to your pharmacist. Talk to your doctor before you change any diabetes medicine.

FAQ

Reading supplement labels: common questions

What is a proprietary blend on a supplement label?

A proprietary blend is a mix of ingredients listed under one total weight. Federal rules let the maker hide each ingredient's amount, as long as ingredients appear from most to least by weight. Olivaro's blend weighs 200 mg per mL and lists 22 ingredients that way.

Are proprietary blends bad?

They are legal, but they make dose checks impossible. You cannot compare a hidden amount with the dose used in studies. You can still work out a ceiling from label order. For Olivaro, that ceiling shows key ingredients sit well below studied amounts even in the best case.

What does % Daily Value mean on Olivaro?

It compares one 1 mL serving with a daily reference. Olivaro's chromium is 0.7 mcg per serving, which is 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. The blend has a dagger symbol instead, which means no Daily Value has been set for those ingredients.

Does the FDA approve Olivaro?

No. The FDA does not approve any dietary supplement for safety or effectiveness before sale. Olivaro's label says it is made in an FDA-registered facility. Registration lists the facility with the agency; it is not a review of the product or its claims.

Why does Olivaro have xylitol?

Xylitol is one of two sweeteners in Olivaro's other ingredients, along with stevia Reb A. It adds sweetness without listed sugar. It is dangerous to dogs, causing a rapid blood sugar drop, so keep the bottle out of their reach and call a vet if a dog gets into it.

How do I read the order of ingredients in a blend?

The first ingredient weighs the most and the last weighs the least. Divide the blend total by an ingredient's position to get its highest possible amount. In Olivaro, L-carnitine is 22nd of 22, so it holds at most about 9 mg per mL.
